Planning Healthy Habitats
Recent planning reforms commit developers to providing at least 10% biodiversity net gain, presenting a challenge in balancing the requirements of people with those of many other species.
Among the 70+ projects in the Landscape Decisions Programme, ecological scientists are working in partnership with planners to tackle this challenge by developing computer models to better understand how individual species use the environment in different ways. Their collaboration extends the concept of placemaking to account for the needs of both human and non-human life, ensuring that the landscapes of tomorrow allow both people and nature to thrive.
